Mons Herculis - The Mount of Hercules
Perched on a hill that rises in the center of a plain, surrounded by gentle hills, the town of Monterchi is the first Tuscan outpost you come across when traveling along the Tuscan Valtiberina from Città di Castello towards Arezzo. We have certain information about Monterchi only starting from the 11th century, but its origins date back to the pre-Christian era.
The walls are still well preserved today and, despite the strong earthquake that took place in 1917, the historic center still retains many memories of its medieval past. Famous in the world for preserving the Madonna del Parto, Piero della Francesca’s masterpiece with its own museum, Monterchi has a historic center of considerable interest and a countryside full of small parish churches and rural hamlets.
